The Safety Officer is responsible for leading a zero-harm culture across Knauf operations by coaching employees and contractors, assessing risks, implementing controls, ensuring compliance, and driving continuous improvement. This role blends field presence with data-driven decision-making, ensuring safety protocols are robust, effective, and aligned with regulatory requirements and company standards.


What You’ll Be Doing


Key Responsibilities: Culture, Coaching, and Training


Lead a zero-harm culture through regular toolbox talks, field coaching, and targeted training tailored to Knauf employees and contractors.

Deliver new-hire safety orientations and refresher training; reinforce stop-work authority and safe work practices.

Promote behavior-based safety and facilitate safety observation programs.


Risk Assessment and Control


Conduct risk assessments, JSAs/JHAs, and HIRAs for routine and non-routine tasks.

Identify hazards and implement/verify controls according to the hierarchy of controls (elimination to PPE).

Review and authorize permits-to-work for high-risk activities (LOTO, confined space, hot work, work at height, excavation).


Policies, Procedures, and Systems


Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety protocols, SOPs, and permit-to-work processes.

Maintain document control, versioning, and accessibility of safety procedures and emergency plans.

Support integration and upkeep of EHS management systems (e.g., ISO 45001-aligned processes).


Inspections, Audits, and Compliance


Conduct daily field inspections and periodic audits; record findings, assign actions, and track them to closure.

Ensure compliance with applicable safety and environmental regulations, permits, and company standards.

Prepare for and support regulatory inspections, compile evidence, records, and corrective action plans.


Performance Monitoring and Reporting


Monitor leading indicators (near-misses, safety observations, training completion, audit closure rates) and lagging indicators (TRIR, LTIR, DART, first-aid cases).

Analyze trends, maintain dashboards, and report safety KPIs and insights to site leadership on a defined cadence.

Recommend targeted interventions based on data (e.g., training, engineering controls, procedure changes).


Incident Management and Root Cause Analysis


Investigate incidents, first-aid cases, and near-misses promptly; preserve scene, gather evidence, interview witnesses.

Perform root cause analysis (e.g., 5-Why, fishbone, TapRooT methodology) and develop corrective and preventive actions.

Track CAPAs to closure; verify effectiveness and share learnings across teams.


Emergency Preparedness and Response


Coordinate emergency preparedness, including emergency response plans, roles, training, evacuation routes, drills, and muster point management.

Check readiness of emergency equipment (fire systems, spill kits, eyewash stations, first-aid supplies).

Participate in or lead emergency response during incidents; conduct post-drill/incident reviews.


Equipment, PPE, and Ergonomics


Evaluate and recommend appropriate PPE, safety equipment, and risk-control technologies.

Collaborate with procurement and maintenance on selection, trials, commissioning, and preventive maintenance.

Lead ergonomic assessments and improvements to reduce musculoskeletal risks.


Collaboration and Continuous Improvement


Partner with supervisors, production, maintenance, engineering, and contractor teams to integrate safety into planning and daily work.

Support management of change (MOC) for new processes, equipment, and materials.

Stay current with standards, regulations, and best practices; drive continuous improvement projects and safety campaigns.


Contractor and Project Safety


Support contractor pre-qualification, induction, and compliance monitoring.

Verify contractor adherence to Knauf safety requirements and permit-to-work processes.

Provide safety oversight and assurance for maintenance shutdowns and capital projects.

Qualifications


Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, Environmental/Industrial Engineering, or related field; equivalent experience considered.

Professional certifications preferred

Formal training in incident investigation and root cause analysis (e.g., TapRooT, 5-Why).

First Aid/CPR certification; fire safety and emergency response training preferred.

Experience:

3–7 years of EHS/safety experience in manufacturing, construction, or industrial operations; building materials or process industry experience is an advantage.

Demonstrated success implementing hierarchy-of-controls solutions, permit-to-work systems, and contractor safety management.

Experience conducting audits/inspections, managing CAPA processes, and presenting safety performance to leadership.

Skills And Competencies


Strong field presence, coaching, and facilitation skills; able to influence without authority.

Solid knowledge of local/regional safety and environmental regulations and standards (e.g., ISO 45001, OSHA/EU Directives).

Proficient in risk assessments (JSA/JHA, HIRA), LOTO, confined space, hot work, and work-at-height controls.

Data analysis and dashboarding skills; proficient with Excel and presentation tools; Power BI/Tableau experience is a plus.

Excellent communication (verbal and written), documentation, and stakeholder management skills.

Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.


Tools And Systems


EHS management software and action-tracking systems (e.g., Intelex, Enablon, or similar).

Microsoft Office suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word); data visualization tools preferred.

Familiarity with handheld inspection apps and digital permit-to-work platforms is an advantage.
